トランスナショナルな歴史と科学史 Turchetti and others "Introduction: Have We Ever Been ‘Transnational’?"

 国民国家の枠組みを超えたかたちでの歴史記述を行う機運が歴史学全体で高まっていることを受けて、科学史の側がそれにどう応じるべきかをしめした特集にふされた序文を読む。基本的には文献サーヴェイである。

 国境を超えたトランスナショナル歴史学は1990年ごろより本格化してきた。外交史家の入江昭がAmerican Historical Associationの会長になった1988年はその一つの転機である。これいこう外交史家はトランスナショナルな歴史記述に意識的にとりくむこととなった。アメリカとならんで、ドイツでもフランスでも欧州中心主義的な歴史記述からの脱却が模索されるようになっている。科学史はこのトランスナショナルな歴史記述の機運の高まりによって起こった議論に積極的に関わってきたとはいえない。しかし科学史学にはこの議論に大きく貢献できる蓄積がある。科学は国境を超えて行われる活動である。それゆえたとえば国境を超えたモノ、ヒト、技術の移動を問うた研究が科学史では多くある。また国家や地域ごとの研究文化の特徴を追うような比較科学史も行われている。トランスナショナルな枠組みのなかで、いかに科学的主張や科学コミュニティの活動が国民国家の主張をになわされてきたかについても検討がなされている。つまり科学知識が多様な種類の境界を超え、それによりハイブリッド化する過程について科学史はかなりの分析を施してきた。ここから現状のトランスナショナル歴史学に寄与することが可能であろうと著者たちはしている。
