　1990年に書かれたサーヴェイ論文を読む。科学知識の社会学が科学史研究にいかなるインパクトを与えているかが述べられている。科学史と社会学が（いろいろありながらも）もっとも接近していたじきに書かれたエッセイで、当時の知的雰囲気を強く感じさせる。書いて有ること自体にはとくに目新しいことはない。Collins, Pickering, Pinch, Latour（そしてFleck）の研究が科学研究として引かれ、それを受けての科学史研究として、Shapin, Schaffer, Gooding, Galisonらの仕事が解説されている。大きな潮流としては、Latourやある時期のPickeringにみられるような、科学活動（とくに実験活動）における決定不全性と、それを克服するために動員されるレトリカルな活動への過度の重視をいましめて、Galisonが指摘するような世界の側が実験する側に課してくる物質的な制約をも考慮に入れねばならないという動向がしめされている。そのさいに参照される枠組みはFleckのactive/passive elementsの対となる。
