　有名なOldroydさんの本。96年のもので、このあと98年と2002年に一冊ずつ研究書が出ています。

　両方とも未読ですが98年のやつは論文集なのでしょうか。

　今日読んだ『地球について考える』は、ヨーロッパの古代から近代に至るまでに、地球についてどのような考えがめぐらされてきたかを概観するというかなり野心的というか、扱っている範囲が広い本です。Oldroydさんも大御所ということで、かなり書き方も自由ですし、注の付け方も学術的という感じではありません（とはいえ本文だけで300頁以上あるので、やはり専門家向けなのでしょうけど）。
　僕が読んだのは1章から3章までの部分で、古代から初期近代に至るまでの地学史が扱われています。たぶん読む人が読めば何も新しいことは書いていなくて、当たり前の記述の連続なのだと思います。
　ただ19ページについている「古代における火山活動と地震の記述」という表は便利そうです。古代の著述家で火山や地震に言及している人が網羅的にあげられています（できれば具体的な言及箇所ものせておいてほしかったです）。他にも20ページの表には「蒸気の理論を採用している人」としてアリストテレス、ディオドロス、セネカ、プリニウスが挙げられています。
　うん、この19,20ページにある表はかなりよさそうです。逆にいえば、古代から初期近代に関してはこの表くらいしか得るべきものがないといった方がよいのかもしれません。この本は通史であり、なおかつ力点は近代以降に置かれているのでそれも当然ですけど。ただルクレティウスにはもっとページを割かないといけないでしょう（ぶつぶつ）。
